Recent studies reveal that many Americans, especially older adults, aren’t getting enough protein. Research from Abbott and Ohio State University shows over one-third of adults aged 50+ fall short of the recommended protein intake. This shortfall is critical because protein is vital for maintaining muscle mass and overall health as we age. Additionally, experts suggest that the U.S. dietary guidelines for protein are outdated. They recommend higher protein intake for older adults, pregnant and lactating women, and children over three to meet their specific health needs.

americans aren't eating enough protein!

Recent studies indicate that a significant number of Americans, particularly older adults, are not meeting their daily protein needs. According to research conducted by Abbott and Ohio State University, over one-third of adults aged 50 and above are not consuming the recommended amount of protein. This is concerning because adequate protein intake is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, strength, and overall health, especially as people age (HOME).

Moreover, experts argue that the current U.S. dietary recommendations for protein are outdated and too low, particularly for older adults, pregnant and lactating women, and children over three years old. While the average recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, newer research suggests that older adults may need closer to 1.25 grams per kilogram to maintain muscle mass and overall health (Big Think).

These findings highlight the importance of reevaluating dietary guidelines to ensure they meet the needs of vulnerable populations. Increasing awareness about the importance of protein and incorporating high-protein foods into daily meals can help address this nutritional gap.
